Hillary in San Fran
So a new video has hit youtube.com of Sen. Hillary Clinton speaking at a fund raiser. Now no one is saying whether this was a fund raiser to pay off her debt or a fund raiser for Sen. Barack Obama. Most likely it was to pay off her debt.
Our main three cable news channels have been obsessing over the fact she talked about possibly having her name on the ballot, maybe leading to a roll call at the convention. This is obviously something the Obama camp doesn't want and if one watches the entire video as opposed to the 30 seconds shown as a clip on TV, we can see that she isn't against that but the absolute last thing she wants is a single person who voted for her to not vote for Mr. Obama on November 4.
The entire video was edited and it is obvious at a couple different points. This was cut in such a way that it was intended to have the very specific appearance that Hillary somehow doesn't support Obama.
She specifically states that what she (and Obama) doesn't want to see happen is have someone go home feeling like they weren't "satisfied". She doesn't want anyone feeling so disenfranchised that they stay home or even vote for Sen. John McCain. One person, who says she is an actual delegate, goes on to say that the way to have unity is to allow their votes to be cast and recognized. Hillary responds by saying "as you can tell I don't have total control over this process" and the video is cut prematurely. Hillary could be doing a two step here but more likely she still can't believe she lost and honestly believes that Obama would still make a better president or at least represent her views and beliefs better than Mr. McCain.
The very first lady to comment before Mrs. Clinton takes the mic in the video says "...never saw anyone's favorite daughters on the list...part of our culture growing up...please consider having your name put on the list...no disrespect to future President Obama...we understand, those of us who have lived through those campaigns...democrat and republican conventions are about...younger voters don't know that it isn't a sign of disrespect but it is a show of unity". This context and underlying sentiment shouldn't be ignored. That is the statement that created the 10-30 second sound bite the news stations are running with. People shouldn't continue to assume every Sen. Clinton supporter who wants their vote counted and recognized, when they've been ignored in public office, that this is important to them and for a great deal of women Mrs. Clinton's candidacy was every bit as groundbreaking as Mr. Obama's. Some of Sen. Clinton's delegates simply want to have the feeling of and know that they cast an official vote for a female to be president for the first time in their lives. Something they probably never thought possible, just like with African-Americans voting for Sen. Barack Obama.
